Landscapes Big and Small

Learn about techniques for capturing striking landscape photographs. We'll look at how to approach both grand scenics and intimate views. Topics include:

  • Composition techniques: balancing foreground and background elements, framing, leading lines, patterns and using perspective for dramatic effect.
  • Choosing the right aperture and point of focus to maximize depth of field.
  • Using graduated neutral density filters and software techniques to deal with the challenges of high contrast scenes.
  • Photographing landscapes with water as a major element (rivers, waterfalls, oceans). Capturing good exposures of water, controlling whether the water has detail or is silky smooth, and finding the right conditions for colorful reflections.
  • Equipment: lenses, filters, tripods
  • Balancing color: working with complimentary and opposing colors.
  • Using light to create dramatic landscapes; how to choose the best time of day, direction and quality of light.

After a presentation we'll go outside to practice applying these landscape techniques in the gardens.

After the class all attendees will be sent a link to download a color pdf handout with the slides from the presentation.
