View Charleston Gallery

Charleston is rich with photographic material from historic architecture to vibrant flowers to views of the ocean. It's a beautiful location in the spring with azaleas, irises and poppies blooming. Historic downtown has colorful houses, each with their own features worthy of being photographed: wrought iron designs, lamps and overflowing flower boxes. We'll also visit Magnolia Gardens where we'll find azalea lined paths, spanish moss dangling from live oaks and bald cypresses with bright green spring leaves. Other locations not to be missed are beaches and cemeteries.

A key element of a workshop is that I’m out in the field with participants for extended periods of time. I'll be assisting attendees and answering questions while we're out photographing. I'm there to help you build your skills and vision as a photographer. Small groups allow me to work with everyone individually in the field. When not out photographing you’ll spend time learning from presentations, critiques and software demonstrations.

Schedule
The workshop runs from Wednesday afternoon through Sunday morning. The days will be long, but rewarding. The locations I've selected are places I know well. We'll get to the right location at the right time to make the most of the light, land and subject. I'm familiar with where to find the best subjects and scenes, and how to take advantage of the weather and lighting conditions.

Wednesday
At 4pm we'll meet for an orientation, discuss the schedule, have an instructional presentation and answer questions.

Thursday, Friday & Saturday
The three full days of the workshop will be a combination of going out to photograph and learning from presentations and critiques. Most days we'll be out photographing from sunrise to mid-morning and again from late afternoon until sunset. The exact shooting schedule and locations depend on the weather and light. There will also be classroom time which includes presentations, digital workflow, software demos and photo critiques. Photo critiques are a great way to learn how your images can be improved, as well as see how other people photographed the same location. Having critiques during the workshops allows you the opportunity to apply the feedback and try new techniques the next time we go out to photograph.

Sunday
We'll photograph at sunrise/early morning and will wrap things up by mid-morning. We’ll usually be done by checkout time at the hotel.
