November is prime time for bird photography as the fall migration is under day. Snow geese fill the air as they take off and land en masse. Other common birds include cormorants, snowy egrets, great blue herons, plus shore birds. There are also wild ponies and sika deer to be found around Chincoteague. In addition to the wildlife, the beach and marsh areas offer prime venues for photographing scenes at sunrise and sunset.
A key element of a workshop is that I’m out in the field with participants for extended periods of time. I'll be assisting attendees and answering questions while we're out photographing. I'm there to help you build your skills and vision as a photographer. Small groups allow me to work with everyone individually in the field. When not out photographing you’ll spend time learning from presentations, critiques and software demonstrations.
Schedule
Workshops run from 1pm Friday through 1pm Sunday. The days will be long, but rewarding. The locations I've selected are places I know well. We'll get to the right location at the right time to make the most of the light, land and subject. I'm familiar with where to find the best subjects and scenes, and how to take advantage of the weather and lighting conditions.
Friday
Meet at 1pm for an orientation, discuss the schedule, have an instructional presentation and answer questions, then head out for a sunset shoot.
Saturday
Saturday will be a combination of going out to photograph and learning from presentations and critiques. We'll be out photographing from sunrise to mid-morning and again from late afternoon until sunset. The exact shooting schedule and locations depend on the weather and light. There will also be classroom time which includes presentations, digital workflow, software demos and photo critiques. Photo critiques are a great way to learn how your images can be improved, as well as see how other people photographed the same location. Having critiques during the workshops allows you the opportunity to apply the feedback and try new techniques the next time we go out to photograph.
Sunday
We'll photograph at sunrise/early morning, have a brief classroom session and wrap things up by 1pm.
